VANCOUVER YOUTH CHOIR
FOUNDED BY CARRIE TENNANT, 2013
The Vancouver Youth Choir is the Lower Mainland’s newest choral organization for children and youth, providing a space for beginning to advanced young singers to develop their artistry in a creative and supportive community.
Founded in 2013 by Carrie Tennant, the choir originally included just 30 singers aged 14–23. It has since grown to include 140 auditioned singers in three separate choral levels: VYC Kids (grades 3–6), VYC Junior (grades 7–10), and the Vancouver Youth Choir (ages 15–24).
All are young, talented, and incredibly dedicated, passionate, and joyful about their music-making.
In three short seasons, the VYC has established itself as a force to be reckoned with on the Canadian choral scene, becoming known for their heartfelt and authentic performances. After placing second at the National Competition for Amateur Choirs in 2015, the choir went on to represent Canada at the International Choral Festival in Missoula, Montana, in 2016. Just entering their fourth season, VYC has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with on the Canadian choral scene. This associate choir with the Vancouver Chamber Choir was also featured at the Cantando Festival, where they lead workshops for over 2000 high school students. From engineering students to registered doulas and future chefs, the singers of Vancouver Youth Choir are united by their love of the choral art form and their desire to contribute to their communities.
This season, the Vancouver Youth Choir looks forward to three concerts. A Family Christmas will feature the old and new music of winter and the holidays, highlighting the many definitions of “family” that exist for their singers. In Shelter, the choirs will examine aspects of community, compassion, and what it means to create and maintain “shelter” for one another. The VYC season wraps up with Light of Mine, a celebration of diversity and collaboration.
